Stark built a big lead and then maintained it down the back stretch, fending off all challengers to win her first major championship at the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills.
Stark finished at 7 under to win by two. Nelly Korda had her best Open finish as she tied for second with Rio Takeda. There was a three-way tie for fourth with Hyejin Choi, Ruoning Yin and Chevron Championship winner Mao Saigo at 4 under.
All golfers can point to a good break here or there and Maja Stark got another one on the 14th hole Sunday.
The world’s top-ranked amateur battled through the long and undulating terrain of Erin Hills to top the amateur standings at the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open. Woad, one of six amateurs to make the cut out of the 26 in the field, carded a final-round 75 to finish at 5 over for the championship, two ahead of Texas’s Farah O’Keefe and Carolina Lopez-Chacarra.

Just like that, Stark leads by three shots. Moments after Nelly Korda missed a par putt from inside five feet on the par-3 13th, Stark birdied the 11th and her lead is suddenly three with seven holes to go.
Korda is 2 under through nine holes and has it to 6 under, with birdies on Nos. 1, 7 and 8 (and a bogey on 6) to get to within a shot of the lead held by Maja Stark.
Rio Takeda almost whiffs on a ball
Facing an impossible lie Sunday, Rio Takeda took a big swing at her ball deep in the rough hanging on the edge of a bunker. And she almost whiffed, clipping the ball and sending it into the sand. She was at 6 under, tied for second, but ended up with a double bogey on the fifth to fall three back.
The final pairing of Maja Stark and Julia Lopez Ramirez is on the course. Stark leads at 7 under, Ramirez a shot back at 6 under. Chevron winner Mao Saigo is 1 under through 2 so she has forged a tie for second at 6 under as all golfers are now on the golf course at Erin Hills.

What is the U.S. Women’s Open playoff format?
The USGA uses a two-hole aggregate playoff format if there are any ties after 72 holes. If there are still golfers tied after the two holes, the format flips to sudden death until a winner is determined. The USGA went to this format for the Women’s Open in 2018.
The previous format was a three- or four-hole aggregate, used from 2007 to 2017. From 1953, when the tournament started, until 2006, the Women’s Open playoff was 18 holes held the day after the final round.
What’s the purse for the U.S. Women’s Open?
The 2025 U.S. Women’s Open will have the largest purse in women’s golf, with a total of $12 million being distributed among the professionals in the four-round tournament at Erin Hills.
With 26 amateur players in the 156-person field and the cut line being the top 60 players and ties, it’s impossible to break down a projected payout. The USGA awards $10,000 to professionals who do not make the weekend.
