May 31 update: Exactly 60 players make the U.S. Women’s Open cut
The second round finished the morning of May 31 after play had been suspended due to darkness, and the cut line settled at 1 over par.
That meant exactly 60 players — the minimum number — made the weekend at the U.S. Women’s Open.
Twenty groups of three players each began the third round at 10:01 a.m. CT., with 10 groups starting on No. 1 and 10 groups starting on No. 10.
Former world No. 1 Yani Tseng, defending tournament champion Yuka Saso and teenage phenom Asterisk Talley all shot 2-over to miss the cut by a single shot. Fan favorite Rose Zhang also missed the cut at +2.
The second round was officially stopped with 12 players still on the course at 8:26 p.m.
So, there will be some cut line drama in the morning, as Amari Avery and Auston Kim are both 1-under par, Seunghui Ro and amateur Maria José Marin are 1-over.
With the cut line holding firm at 1-over and fewer and fewer players left to finish, two-time U.S. Women’s Open winner and defending champion Yuka Saso will miss the cut after shooting 3-over.
Favorites sent packing
One of the tournament favorites beginning the week was Jeeno Thitikul, the world’s second-ranked player, but she was 3-over after two rounds and also missed the cut.
Fan favorites Yani Tseng (+2), amateur Asterisk Talley (+2) and Lexi Thompson (+3) also did not make the weekend.
A little after 5 p.m., the cut line dropped to 1-over, per the USGA. At that point, 64 players were at that score or better. Ten players were at 2-over.
Players at 3-over or worse are now very likely done for the tournament.
As the morning wave of players finished their day and some of the afternoon groups have made the turn to their back nine, and the projected cut line remains 2-over.
At 4 p.m., 76 players were at 2-over while another 10 were at 3-over. It appears at this juncture those at 3-over will be slamming their trunks and heading home for the weekend.
Here are some notable players at 3-over who still have a chance to sneak inside the cut line:
- Lydia Ko (2-over on her round through nine holes)
- Jeongeun Lee6 (1-under on her round through seven holes)
Lexi Thompson (73-74) and Nasa Hataoka (69-78) have finished their rounds at 3-over.
As of 2 p.m. CT, there were 78 golfers with a score of 2-over or better, making 2-over the projected cut. There were 90 players at 3-over or better, so a lot would have to go wrong for many players for those at 4-over to make the weekend.
Here are some notable names that finished at 3-over who will need a lot of help for the cut line to move:
- Lexi Thompson, +3 (73-74)
- Nasa Hataoka, +3 (69-78)
Here are some notable names at 4-over for the tournament:
- Hyo Joo Kim, +4 (75-73)
- Rose Zhang, +4 (through one hole)
- Jeongeun Lee6,* +4 (through one hole)
- Yani Tseng, +4 (through four holes)
- Sung Hyun Park, +5 (through one hole)
*For scoring purposes, she is called Jeongeun Lee6 to differentiate herself from other Korean LPGA golfers with that name.
