The Boston Red Sox beat writers had circled Sunday as a significant day: It’d be the day Kristian Campbell made his debut as a first baseman.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo wrote on X that every sign from Campbell and manager Alex Cora pointed toward this being the case.
But when the lineup card came out Sunday, Abraham Toro was at first base and Campbell was at his standard second base.
It’s the latest twist in an ongoing infield position saga in Boston.
It dates back to the offseason, when Alex Bregman’s signing moved third baseman Rafael Devers, begrudgingly, to DH.
The next dilemma came when Triston Casas, the everyday first baseman, went down with a season-ending injury.
And then Bregman got hurt, too, and is expected to be out for a month or more, opening up third base.

Boston hasn’t solved all its moving parts yet, but Campbell at first base seemed to be a partial solution.
Instead, that plan has at least been delayed.
Toro has been hitting well, and the Red Sox may have just wanted his bat in the lineup.
But the Red Sox have definitely kept everyone on their toes with their constantly shifting infield plans.
